Most people use either Blogger or WordPress for their blog, and there appears to be an ongoing debate as to which is best. I prefer to design my own blogs using Drupal,but that’s not related to this topic. With repect to the Blogger and WordPress debate, there is only one answer for serious bloggers.

That is in now way being derogatory towards Blogger – just fact: run from Google’s hosting site kown as Blogspot, Blogger is an easy blogging system to use, and being easy, it has very litle opportunity for customization; however Googe users can use Google’s toobar to add posts or online content to their blog at the clickof a button. However, WordPress wins hands down when we consider serious boggers seeking more detailed customization.

Sure, you can ftp Blogger to your website and run it from there, but if you do the same with WordPress you have an infinitely larger number of possibilities that Blogger cannot even begin to compete against.

WordPress Video Tutorials

If you want to operate WordPress form your website you have to do it right, and it takes some knowledge of how your web space works and also of your online databases. However, learning is well worth it, and there are WordPress video tutorials online that can help you to do so easily. There is a lot involved, but all you have to do is copy what you see on the video and you will get the same result as the video does.

Not only that, but in order to make best use of it, you have to learn the benefits of using plugins, widgets and themes and how to use them to your advantage. A widget is a small icon that activates these plugins when clicked upon. If you use a good Worpress tutorial, all that will be explained, but if your are doubly fortunate to have a WordPress video tutorial, then you will be able to see what is being done and follow it exactly with your own blog and make it work as it should.

There is now doubt in my view that Blogger is inferior to WordPress as a blogging system, as long as you run WordPress from your own website, and you will also need a WordPress tutorial, preferably a WordPress video tutorial, to ensure that it is installed correctly and that you understand how your blog can be modified and customized to what you want it to look like.

Adding New Sidebar In WordPress Theme

For WordPress user, using free wordpress theme created by other is always fun. For the one who does not have enough time to create his original theme, or for someone who do not have special ability in web design, using a free wordpress theme is the best way out.

All we need to do is searching for the best design that we want, download its zipped file to our own computer, extract it, and finally upload the theme to our hosting. It is really simple.

Sometimes we got a problem regarding the design of the choosen theme. For example, we found a very good-looking theme, nice color or background image, and any other good thing, but the theme only have one sidebar. For some wordpress user, single sidebar is not enough at all. The ideal 2 sidebar (3 column wordpress theme) is a must. So, if we find this situation, what can we do? Delete the theme and find another? Noo… It’s really wasting our time. All we have to do is only adding a new sidebar without modifying the theme too much.

Let’s see what we have to do to add a new sidebar in a choosen theme…

Open the theme’s folder.
Find a file called functions.php and open it with notepad or another code editor. If there’s no functions.php (probably some 2 column theme do not need this fle), you can creat a new file an name it functions.php. Replace the old code (if any) with this new code :

Save the file.
Create a new file called sidebar2.php and insert this code :

Open the old sidebar.php file, and insert this code at the bottom (do not delete or change any old code in this file) :

Save the file.

Open your wordpress admin panel, see the widget button in a design section. You have a new sidebar in your theme now. You can add any widget you want in your new sidebar. Have fun!

Nowadays, thousands or maybe more free wordpress theme can be downloaded by you for free. Simply type “free wordpress theme” or similar phrase in search engine, you’ll see so many theme from everywhere. But, how do you know that your choosen wordpress template is really good for you? This time I would like to share some tips to choose a free wordpress theme…

See the screenshot first. Make sure that you choose a theme that fit with your blog content. If your blog talking about music, for example, use a theme that contain some musical instrument in it. Or at least, use the general (unspecific) theme. Do not use some kind of basketball theme if you talk about music in your blog. Believe me, it’s annoying for your reader.
Check the theme’s demo. Screenshot can’t show you all the good or bad things in the theme. Make sure that this theme has a layout, color, and other things that suit your need. Checking the demo will guide you to “take” or “leave” this theme.
Choose the “Widget Ready” theme. WordPress has so many add on component, plugin, etc. You’ll missed a lot of wonderful plugins if your theme is not a widget ready theme.
Check the validity of XHTML and CSS of your new theme. Make sure that that your theme has a valid XHTML and CSS according to W3C standard.
Check the footer’s link. Be careful, don’t choose a theme that has so many link in its footer. In this case, two designer’s link in a footer is a max.
Check it in every possible browser. Make sure that this theme can work correctly in Firefox, I.E, Opera, and (if you use) Mac.

Finish! Now, you ready to install download and install your new theme.
