What is the meaning of Private Whois Domain?

Let’s make it clear. I believe that most of you have your own registered domain. It’s easy to buy a domain, especially a common .com, .net, .info, etc. All you need to do is find an ICANN-accredited domain registrar, most of web-hosting provider also act as ICANN registrar/reseller, and buy a domain for only (average) $8 – $15 per year.

But, do you ever notice that your personal data will be available to see by everyone right after you register the domain? Yes. Your full name, your address, your email, even your phone number are immediately made available to everyone. This case happen because registration of domain use a standard public domain registration. Private Whois Domain is the only way to keep these personal information secret.

The difference between domain without and with private whois described in the example below.

Let’s imagine. Your name is John Smith. You want to buy “johnsmith.com” through one of domain registrar. Your address is “25 business SQ 2001, Philadelphia, PA 19103, United States”. Your email is “johnsmith@gmail.com” and your phone number is “123-123-7777″.

When you buy “johnsmith.com”, people can immediately access your personal data above by typing that domain in many free whois search tool, such as who.is, whois.net, whois-search.com, allwhois.com, etc. For example, when you type “johnsmith.com” in who.is site, you’ll see the information in the image below :

public whois

When you use a whois private domain, noone but you can see those information. See the image below (use a whois private domain), and compare it with those image above (a standard public registration domain).

private whois domain registration

Note that not every domain registrar give their customer a power to do this for free. Some big registrar, such as godaddy.com and domain.com sell this service with a very high price. Godaddy, for example, sell the private whois service at $8,99. Very close to the price of domain itself. Domain.com sell this service at $6,99. Some other registrar even do not have this service at all, so you can not hide your personal information unless you transfer your domain to another registrar.

But don’t worry. There are still some domain registrar who give private whois domain for free, or for a very reasonable cheap price. Name.com for example, give this service to their customer for free. Another registrar, such as domaincheap.com and cheapdomainnamesdot.com sell this service for only $2 a year.

So, think twice before you buy a domain. It’s ok if the domain made for your company. But, if you use the domain for your personal website or blog, it’s better for you to use a domain with private whois service. Believe me. It will eliminate the risk of domain-related SPAM, junk mail and sales calls, selling of your personal information, and many more.
