Creating a standard banner sizes is very important in the internet advertising and marketing business. Sometimes advertiser creates a very wonderful banner design, but unfortunately, publisher or sites owner refuses to install the banner with a silly reason : IT DOES NOT MATCH THE SITE’S LAYOUT.
Imagine, how many opportunity would be lost if this case happenned to us. Then, the question is, What should we do to create a banner that match to almost every site’s layout? The answer is : We have to make a banner with standard banner size that apply widely.
Interactive Advertising Bureau has created a standard banner size called IMU (Interactive Marketing Unit). IMU includes the standard banner size for general uses. Overall, the standard banner size can be devided as follows :
1. Rectangles and Pop-ups, usually uses to make a pop-up window banner ad.
- Large rectangle : 336 x 280px
- Medium rectangle : 300 x 250px
- Square pop-up : 250 x 250px
- Vertical rectangle : 240 x 400px
- Rectangle : 180 x 150px
2. Banners and Buttons, this size is the most widely used and often we find on almost every kind of sites. This type of banner is usually installed in parts of a website. Can be in part of an article or on the top, sidebar, or bottom of the site.
- Leaderboard : 728 x 90px
- Full banner : 468 x 60px
- Half banner : 234 x 60px
- Button 1 : 120 x 90px
- Button 2 : 120 x 60 px
- Micro bar : 88 x 31px
- Micro button : 80 x 15px
- Vertical banner : 120 x 240px
- Square button : 125 x 125px
3. Skyscraper, this banner usually installed on the sidebar of a website. The form is always stretching from top to bottom, therefore, called skyscrapers. Suitable sites for the solid content, for example, contains many articles or writing a long and generally to be in the scroll.
- Skycraper : 120 x 600px
- Wide skycraper : 160 x 600px
- Half page : 300 x 600px

Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) always evaluate the effectiveness of these standard banner size. There’s always some possibility that the standard would be update in the future and even will increase the new standard-size.
