Before we learn about setting permalink in wordpress, it’s better if we make the same perception first regarding what permalink is. Permalink comes from the phrase “Permanent Link”, is a human-readable URL structure that point to specific content of a weblog and/or forum, from the frontpage to the archive. Actually, there’s no real folder or file name as seen on the browser’s address bar.
By default, wordpress set permalink with a very simple structure. It consist of the main domain, followed by the post ID number.
http://compexplorer.com/?p=13
Permalink above will be shown in an address bar of every browser. This original permalink structure is good for us if we care to count how much post that have been created. The question is, is there any silly people who cares about how much post she/he has created?
In wordpress admin, we can specify the permalink in : Home - Setting - Permalink. We can choose the looks of our permalink by click the radio button of 4 basic permalink given by the wordpress, or create ourselves a custom permalink structure.

1. Default, consist of main domain slash post id. E.g : http://compexplorer.com/?p=13.
2. Day and name, consist main domain slash year slash month slash day slash postname. E.g : http://compexplorer.com/2008/10/30/permalink-setting-in-wordpress.
3. Month and name, consist of main domain slash year slash month slash postname. E.g : http://compexplorer.com/2008/10/permalink-setting-in-wordpress.
4. Numeric, consist of main domain slash archive slash post id. E.g : http://compexplorer.com/archives/13.
5. Custom structure, this made for wordpress user who want to make their own permalink.
Most of wordpress master user almost never use the first and the fourth permalink style above. It’s not eye catching, isn’t it? For the one who care about timeline, they would preferably choose the second or the third choise. It’s very similar, the difference only in showing the day.
How about the custom structure?
We can make our own custom permalink by typing the code of permalinks style we want. Here are the list of common custom structure that you can use.
%year% : The year (4 digits) of the post.
%monthnum% : Month of the year.
%day% : Day of the month.
%hour% : Hour of the day.
%minute% : Minute of the hour.
%second% : Second of the minute.
%postname% : A clean version of the title of the post.
%post_id% : The unique ID # of the post.
%category% : A clean version of the category name.
%author% : A clean version of the author name.
You can make your own permalink using one or more structures above. Don’t forget to end your permalink structure with one of these choice : %postname% or %post_id%.
This blog for example, using the custom structure :
/%category%/%postname%/
This mean that permalink of this blog will show the category and the post name. You can see permalink of this post in your address bar http://compexplorer.com/wordpress-tutorial/permalink-setting-in-wordpress/. Some master said that this structure is the finest permalink structure, because it’s really search engine friendly. But some others prefer the standard day and name structure, with their own good argue too.
Now, it’s depend on you to choose how your premalink will looks.

I think that I like the month and name one best. I think that it would be easier to keep track of what you wrote and when you wrote it so that you can moniter your content and how current it is, rather than counting how many posts you have.
